Back in October when I posted this, I promised daytime photos of our front room redo. Ya, I'm slow. :) There are still a few things left to do (like finish adding length to the curtains), but here they are:
I'm looking for opinions on a couple of things:
1) What do you think of this pleated fabric panel that I made to cover the bookshelves? We were originally planning to have cabinet doors made, but are not sure we want to invest that kind of money into a house we may not be in all that long. This fabric was my original inspiration piece for the colors in the front room. But, after adding in brown and then falling in love with the zebra print, I'm not so sure it goes now? What do you think? I also have a solid cream color fabric I could use to make a pleated panel . . . Or maybe I should just get rid of a bunch of fabric and most of our books (that's what's hiding behind there) and leave the shelves open, but very minimally accented with non-breakable things. Hmm?
2) Next question: I bought this desk with the intent to paint it, but can't decide if I should paint it white or black. I'm leaning toward white, but the tv cabinet is black, so I'm not sure which would look better. Thoughts? Also, I would be painting a chair to match, not the one in the picture, but a cute dainty looking one with curves that currently resides in Kimberly's room. Also, I'll probably paint the little table in the window corner to match the desk.

Well, I love your clean lines and elegance.
I'm stuck. I love the fabric you hung but you are right, the motif is different. The Zebra is modern and the stuff you hung is shabby. If you did cover it, I'd do the aqua solid. However, I like your idea of simple accessories.
The table seems like it should be black or a aqua. If it's white I think it will blend into the wall. I just saw yesterday that black and white rooms should have a few pops of a color of choice. You have all ready done aqua so I wonder if you should do a brighter and maybe darker version of that to have a pop here and there.
Love the room. The windows are so nice.
i was going to say the same thing--paint the table a color. your accessories will look even better on it. for the shelves, i think you should do a plain fabric or leave it open and rearrange. i love the pillows and rug--everything looks really good!
The room is absolutely gorgeous and so elegant. Awesome job! I agree with the above post about the fabric having a different style of pattern, but the color works. It is hard to say without seeing it in person, but from the pictures I would say that it doesn't stick out or detract so maybe you could leave them up there (since you have them all made) and "try them out" to see how you like them over time.
As far as the table, I would say that if you want it to stand out and be an accent piece I would go with black, but if you would prefer it blend in a be more utilitarian then go with white.
Also, you might not be in this house too much longer???
Thanks for the comments so far. I like the idea of painting the desk a bold color. I already have aqua paint that matches (I used it on the exterior of the front door), so maybe I'll do that. I've been thinking of adding some yellow to the room for a splash of color, but don't think I want to paint with yellow. Maybe a couple accent pieces like pillows or some fresh flowers.
If it were my home, I would leave the shelves open and accesorize them, preferably with items that will add a pop of color. Also, I would paint the desk black and maybe the little chair that is in Kimberly's room a fun color, like the aqua you are talking about. Only because I tend to play it safe and use color to accessorize with, like pillows, throw rugs, and cute chairs (if I had one, that is. lol) and then use basic colors for the larger pieces.
LOVE the room! i'm no decorator so definitely don't give too much weight to my ideas :), but i think the shelves would look great open! and that would be so fun to paint that desk a color!
Great room Katy! In thinking through "to cover or not to cover"...(and knowing that particular layout of house)...that bookshelf area meets your eye as you come into the house...and is right next to a grand and simply decorated fireplace. I'd opt for an open feeling with minimal decorations including some books. It does have a little "seating type"area, so books make sense to leave in. What is on the other side of the fireplace...same thing? As far as the table goes...a "pop" of color would be excellent, and aqua would tie in with your curtains that are on the "window" wall. It is nice to have continuity as the eye travels around the room picking up similar colors of pop! You could paint the table aqua on top with black legs if you wanted....or aqua table and black chair for something different (maybe a zebra seat cushion)!! Great job tho!!
first of all, "i don't know" to all your questions. i know, so helpful! i do like the fabric panel, and actually i think it looks really good with the zebra pring--you wouldn't think it, but it does! i'm totally in to dark furniture, so i lean toward black--but how often do you want to touch it up, because in our house darker furniture shows the dings more.
and second of all, my real response to this post is, oh.my.goodness. your house is spotless!!! it all looks GREAT, but i'm impressed with how clutter-free and relaxing it looks. sigh. i want that!
i would not add yellow. it will be two pop colors and that will. unless you make it a mellow yellow.
opinons are not the final say though, your room should be you, and what you love!:)
