BBQ Fundraiser for my friend, Barb Kelly

Here's your chance to have a world famous Santa Maria-style BBQ. It will be delicious. How do I know? Because Chuck's Dad is one of the guys running the pit and his tri tip and chicken are the best ever. Please, help us raise funds for the purchase of a wheelchair accessible van for Barb. If you'd like tickets, but can't pick them up yourself, let me know and I'll get them to you. If you're not interested in the BBQ but would still like to make a donation, that's fine too.

Here are the details:

The church friends and co-workers of Barb & Duane Kelly are planning a Santa Maria-style barbecue fund-raiser on Saturday, March 1, at the Long’s Drugs parking lot on South Broadway in Santa Maria to help purchase a wheelchair accessible van for Barb and pay for ongoing medical and therapy expenses. Barb, just 42 years old, suffered a severe stroke on August 19th, 2007. Not expected to survive the stroke, she has made a miraculous recovery and continues to show progress with the help of intensive therapy. She is currently moving her right hand and arm, and beginning to show some movement on her left side. She has started to write to communicate. Her voice is showing signs of returning and we are optimistic that she will again be able to speak.

Our hope is that she will be able to return to actively participating in her community, as she did before the stroke. She volunteered at some of the local jr. high schools to assist in teaching math to their students, in addition to privately tutoring Algebra to several local students. Someday, she hopes to return to Cal Poly to finish her teaching degree. She was only a year away from accomplishing that goal. She also assisted in mission trips into Mexico to help the local communities learn more about God.

The family is pursuing the purchase of a wheelchair van to help with her present transportation needs. For now, they manually transfer her from the wheelchair to the car, a process that is taking a toll on their backs!

Will you please help Barb, her husband Duane, and their children Nicole, 16 and Ethan, 13, by purchasing BBQ tickets? They are $10.00 each. Checks should be made out to “CarQuest”, with “BBQ” in the memo line. Each meal will include tri-tip, ¼ chicken, beans, salad & garlic bread. Our goal is to sell at least 2,000 meals. Tickets are available for pre-purchase at the CarQuest store located at 2150 South Broadway in Santa Maria (next to Long’s Drugs) or at The Harbor church, 751 East Foster Road, Santa Maria. The Harbor’s office is open Monday-Friday from 9-noon, and 1-3.

In addition, there will be a bake sale and raffle for 4 tickets to Knott’s Berry Farm, a $100 Chevron gas gift card and other items.

We, her church family and co-workers, along with the Kelly family, appreciate your willingness to help. Thank you.
